Water quality modeling in the Paraibuna River in Juiz de Fora/MG: diagnosis and prognosis

To support the implementation of instruments National Water Resources Policy, as well new legal framework for basic sanitation, environmental assessment water courses becomes important to guide planning, monitoring and management a watershed. Thus, this research aims contribute creation information structures about Paraibuna River its basin in central more urbanized region Juiz de Fora/MG. The QUAL2K model was used considering two different hydrological periods. study considered quality data following variables: dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, temperature, electrical conductivity pH. flow rates tributaries were quantified using an Acoustic Doppler Current Profile (ADCP) hydrometric windmill. With calibrated model, future scenarios simulated moment when sewage treatment plants are operating at maximum capacity, accordance with Fora’s Municipal Plan Basic Sanitation Service. results show that River, section Fora, provided reduced quality, mainly dry season, leading us conclude had direct influence on quality. As scenarios, we reached conclusion best result obtained will be achieved conditions scenario 3 applied. This includes Wastewater Treatment Plants União Indústria, Santa Luzia, renovation Plant Barbosa Laje, expected reduction 90% polluting load streams covered by present work, 50% organic upstream under study.
